UCSB’s Orlando Johnson and his U.S. teammates remained perfect in pool play at the World University Games with a 124-64 rout of Finland on Wednesday.
Johnson made 3-of-4 shots from the field, including his only three-point attempt, to finish with nine points. He also added four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Team USA (4-0) jumped out to a 63-38 lead after two quarters and then outscored the Fins 37-13 in the third quarter to put the game away.
The victory guarantees the U.S. will win Pool D and advance to the next round. The Americans play their final game in pool play when they take on Israel on Thursday, Aug. 18 in a game that is scheduled to tip-off at 12:30 a.m. (PDT).
Meanwhile, Johnson’s fellow Gaucho, Greg Somogyi, had six points, six rebounds, four assists three blocked shots and a steal in Hungary’s 86-74 loss to Mexico. Somogyi now has 12 blocked shots in four games, the highest total of any player at the World University Games. The 7-foot-3 UCSB center and his Hungarian teammates will play South Korea on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 12:30 a.m. (PDT).
