DP spikers win preseason tournament in Oxnard

The Dos Pueblos girls volleyball team won four matches to capture the Oxnard Invitational preseason tournament.

Dos Pueblos got an early start to the girls volleyball season by winning the Oxnard Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The Chargers, who return several players from last year’s Channel League championship team, went 4-0 in the preseason event, beating perennial power Redondo in a five-set final, 25-21, 25-16, 12-25, 24-26, 15-9.

Dos Pueblos opened with sweeps over Royal (25-11,25-14, 25-14) and Vista Murrieta (25-11,25-22, 25-17) and beat Orange Lutheran in the semifinals in four sets, 25-22, 25-10 23-25, 25-15.

“All of the girls worked so hard. I could not be more proud of their effort,” said coach Todd Garrett.

The early season tournament gave Garrett a chance to use several players.

“Emma Craine, Maddie Leiphardt, and Tristan Racich did an amazing job setting all weekend,” he said. “Sammi Rhine, Lina Kleinschimdt, and Sarah McKinny were very solid in the middle. Sophomore Teah Burdick did a great job in her first varsity match, racking up several kills in the finals.

“Sierra Hofstatter and Amanda Moriarty passed well and were virtually unstoppable on the outside,” Garrett continued. “Hannah Harris added to our consistent serve receive and Taylor Racich‘s attack and serve were very tough to handle. Libero Katie “Dyson” Spieler cleaned up everything that came her way.

“We have some work to do but it was a very positive way to kick off the preseason,” he said.
