The brother combination of Owen and Evan Yoshimoto dominated the 18-under bracket at the California Beach Volleyball Association’s Quiksilver Performance-Roxy Athletix Tour stop at East Beach on Tuesday.
The Yoshimotos took down the Santa Barbara team of Alex Biedul and Holden Ploch, 28-16, to capture the title and earn a spot in the Quiksilver Performance-Roxy Athletix Cal Cup Championships in Manhattan Beach on Sept. 4.
Winners in all divisions Tuesday qualified for the Cal Cup.
The Yoshimotos and the Girls 18s champions, Katie Spieler and Dani Rottman, took top honors for the second straight Tuesday. Spieler-Rottman defeated Samantha Cramer and Amber Hawthorne of Granada Hills in the final, 21-12.
The Yoshimotos, who beat Biedul-Ploch last week, train with their father, Steve, and little brother, Matt, at Silver Strand Beach in Oxnard. Matt Yoshimoto and partner Kai Thordarson finished second in the Boys 14s division. They were beaten by the Santa Barbara team of Barron Mainz and Tanner Smith, 21-11.
The 5-11 Owen and 6-5 Evan were standout players for Camarillo High’s boys varsity volleyball team during the spring. They helped the Scorpions reach the CIF Division 3 semifinals.
Their chemistry and steady play have been keys to their success in beach doubles.
The same holds true for Spieler and Rottman, who play for rival high schools. They’ve dominated the competition the past two weeks.
In other finals, Jacob Delson and Bradley Sakaide of Thousand Oaks and Oak Park won the Boys 16s, beating Hart Pitcher and Quinlan Dougherty of Santa Barbara, 28-16; Adlee Van Winden and Taylor Nelson of Napa defeated Myranda Cunningham (Tustin) and Marisa Doran (Orange), 21-17, for the Girls 16s title; Camille Davey (San Clemente) and Becca Dunn (San Juan Capistrano) topped Santa Barbara’s Alexis Rottman-Dane Miller in the Girls 14 final, 21-17, and Kyana Morgan (Manhattan Beach and Presley Forbes (Hermosa Beach) won the Girls 12s over Ventura’s Kobie Jimenez and Sammy Slater.
Van Winden is the daugher of Kelly (Strand) Van Winden, a former Santa Barbara High, Cal Poly and pro beach volleyball standout. Van Winden and Nelson won the Girls 14s Cal Cup title last year.
