Five Westmont teams earn NAIA scholar awards

Westmont athletic teams have received recognition for efforts made in the classroom. Five teams — women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, women’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country — have been named 2010-11 NAIA Scholar-Athlete teams.

In order to be eligible for the award, the team’s collective grade point average during the school year must exceed 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The grade point averages of every student-athlete on the team are used in calculating the team’s GPA.

Women’s volleyball had the highest GPA for the Warriors at 3.25. Men’s cross country posted a GPA of 3.17 while the women distance runners came in at 3.15. Women’s soccer posted a GPA of 3.09 and women’s tennis averaged 3.07.

This year’s recognition marks the seventh time the women’s cross country team has been honored with the award and the fourth time for the men’s cross country team. Women’s tennis received the award for the third time while women’s soccer and women’s volleyball picked-up the honor for the first time.
