In one of most competitive nights this season in the Santa Barbara Nite Moves Series, longtime successful local triathlete Mike Smith overtook the younger Kyle Visin on the run leg and won the aquathon Wednesday night at Leadbetter Beach.
Smith, 47, covered the 1k ocean swim and 5k run in 35:34 and Visin, 27, came in at 36:38, Smith trailed by eight seconds coming out of the water (15:19 to 15:11), but he made up the ground with a 20:15 clocking in the run. Visin ran 21:28.
Top woman finisher, Jessica Broderick, 20, of Boulder, Colo., had the second-fastest aquathon swim time at 14:49 and placed third overall in 37:23.
In the swim, Walker Bell, 13, returned from his 75th place finish at the USA Swimming Open Water 5k Championship in Florida and won his sixth Nite Moves race. His time was 13:54.
Dos Pueblos cross country and track standout Bryan Fernandez and Tyler Hansen waged a good battle in the 5k run. Fernandez pulled out the victory in 16:53, with Hansen coming in second at 16:57. The first female finisher was Fernandez’s DP teammate, Addi Zerrenner in 18:43.
