Stewart Reid, a multi-winner last year, captured the first mile swim at the season-opener of the Santa Barbara Reef and Run Series at East Beach on Tuesday.
Reid finished in 18 minutes, 50 seconds in the chilly water. He won seven mile swims last year.
UCSB’s Kathrine Warren, the world champion in her age group at last year’s ITU World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, came in second in 19:56.
Eighteen swimmers did the mile.
In the 1k swim, Trevor Kosmo edged out Dan Frost of Oxnard, 15:20 to 15:25.
Frost captured the duathlon (1k swim, 5k run) in 39:24.
