Nicci Yvanovich scored a huge upset for SBCC on Thursday in the Southern Cal Individual Regional women’s tennis tournament at Grossmont College in El Cajon.
Nicci Yvanovich, a sophomore from Santa Cruz, had a bye in the first round, then swept No. 5 seed Trina Vuong of Irvine Valley 6-2, 6-2.
“She played great, it was the upset of the day,” said coach Debbie Ekola.
Yvanovich will play Avriel Tomaiko of Saddleback on Friday at 9 a.m. in the Round of 16. SBCC’s Amy Sagraves dropped her first-round match to Jessica Eung of San Diego City 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, Yvanovich-Sagraves were seeded fourth and received a bye. They downed Jillian Dineros-Cressan Delima of El Camino 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.
Yvanovich-Sagraves will play in the Round of 16 on Friday at 1:30 p.m
