SBCC’s Nicci Yvanovich and Amy Sagraves won two matches in dominating style on Friday to move into the doubles semifinals in the Southern Cal Regional women’s tennis tournament at Grossmont College in El Cajon.
Yvanovich-Sagraves, the fourth-seeded duo, beat Katie Billings-Megan Miller of Irvine Valley 6-2, 6-1 and Mardee Littrell/Karleyne Ishima-Oien of Palomar 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. They’ll take on No. 5 seed Jazmin Ortiz-Sharon Reibstein of Grossmont in Saturday’s semifinals at 1:30 p.m.
Earlier in the day, Yvanovich rallied for a stunning 0-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 singles victory over Saddleback’s top player, Avriel Tomaiko.
“Nicci played the match of her life,” said Vaquero coach Debbie Ekola. “She wasn’t quite there in the first set but once she realized she could stay competitive, it was an amazing match.”
Yvanovich lost to Anna Walinowicz of Orange Coast in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1.
Yvanovich qualified for the State Championships in singles and in doubles with Sagraves, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High. The State Tournament will be held May 13-15 in Fresno.
