SBCC’s Janelle Wong and Lyndsay Bergus have accepted scholarships to Minot State and Claremont, respectively. Minot is an NCAA Div. 2 school in North Dakota and Claremont McKenna, located in Southern Cal, is one of the most respected academic institutions in the country.
Wong, a first-team All-WSC choice and former Dos Pueblos High star, received a basketball scholarship while Bergus got an academic scholarship and plans to play basketball.
Minot State was 22-8 last season, including a perfect 15-0 at home. Claremont, an NCAA Div. 3 school, was 20-7 and won 13 of 14 home games.
SBCC was 21-11 in 2010-11 with Wong leading the squad in scoring (10.5), free-throw percentage (81.0) and 3-point buckets (75). Bergus averaged 9.0 points and had a 3.8 grade-point average, majoring in Biology.
Imelda Bealer, another star who helped the Vaqueros reach the state playoffs for a sixth straight year, got a scholarship last month to play for Texas A&M-Kingsville.
