UC Santa Barbara entered Tuesday’s final round at the Big West Golf Championship in sixth-place out of nine teams. Eighteen holes later, the Gauchos were right where they started, sixth place.
As a team, UCSB shot a 22-over par 310 in the final round and couldn’t make-up any ground in fifth-place UC Irvine, which shot a 14-over par 302 in the final round. For the tournament, the Gauchos finished with a 921, 10 shots ahead of seventh-place Long Beach State.
Individually, sophomore Glen Scher <http://ucsbgauchos.cstv.com/sports/m-golf/mtt/scher_glen00.html> carded a 14-over par 230 to finish tied for 19th in the field of 45. Senior Tyler Weir <http://ucsbgauchos.cstv.com/sports/m-golf/mtt/weir_tyler00.html> finished at 16-over par 232, tying for 22nd-place. Paul Otte <http://ucsbgauchos.cstv.com/sports/m-golf/mtt/otte_paul00.html> was the third Gaucho, he was at 18-over par and finished 27th. Scott Lewis <http://ucsbgauchos.cstv.com/sports/m-golf/mtt/lewis_scott00.html> tied for 28th at 19-over 235.
Senior Andrew Gunson <http://ucsbgauchos.cstv.com/sports/m-golf/mtt/gunson_andrew00.html> , who entered the tournament as with Santa Barbara’s second-lowest per round stroke average, struggled to a 35th-place finish at 21-over par 237. Gunson injured his hand in the team’s last regular season tournament but was healthy enough to play in the league tourney.
Lewis shot UCSB’s only sub-par round of the tournament when he recorded a 1-under 71 in the second round.
For the second time in three years the UC Davis Aggies claimed the Big West Men’s Golf Championship that was held at the Mission Viejo Country Club in Mission Viejo, Calif.
UC Davis posted a three-round total of 871 (288-288-295), besting second place Pacific by 17 strokes. The Tigers finished the tournament with a score of 888 and were followed by Cal State Northridge (895), Cal Poly (897), UC Irvine (902) and then UCSB.
Walking away with medalist honors was UC Davis’ Austin Graham, who carded a 6-under 210. Proving to be the most consistent player on the course this week, Graham fired three rounds of 70 to reach his total. This is the second conference tournament win for the senior from San Clemente, Calif., who beat teammate Ramie Sprinkling for medalist honors on the first playoff hole at the 2009 event.
Cal State Northridge’s Nick Delio, who set a competitive course record with a 5-under 67 a day earlier, finished in second place at 214 (74-67-73). Claiming the third slot was Cal Poly’s Bryan Pierce with an even-par 216 (69-73-74). There was a battle for the fourth spot as UC Irvine’s Max Greil, Pacific’s Patrick Kucich and UC Davis’ Tyler Raber found themselves in a three-way after posting 220.
