UCSB sophomore Glen Scher has been selected to play in the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf San Diego Regional on May 19-21, it was announced Monday.
Scher, who led the Gauchos in shots per round average at 73.79, became the first UCSB player in nearly 10 years to win a spring tournament. The sophomore from Thousand Oaks was victorious at the Barona Collegiate Cup in March, recording a 7-under par 209. The Barona field included more than 100 golfers.
Last week, Scher was UCSB’s highest finisher at the Big West Conference Tournament where he ended the tournament tied for 19th.
“This is a great accomplishment for Glen,” said Santa Barbara head coach Steve Lass. “He’s worked hard on his game and this is the payoff. Going to the regional is really a testament to his hard work. I’m also happy for the program because, overall, it’s a step in the right direction for us.”
The San Diego Regional will be hosted by the University of San Diego and the San Diego Sports Commission at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
