The Scarvelis family will have plenty to root for at next Saturday’s CIF Divisional Track and Field Finals in Cerritos.
Dos Pueblos senior Nick Scarvelis and his freshman sister Stamatia both qualified in the shot put and Nick also advanced in the discus at the Division 2 Prelims on Saturday at Moorpark College.
The Chargers qualified a total of five athletes for the finals: Jacob Bartholomew in the 800, Sergey Sushchikh in the 3200 and Marina Plesons in the girls pole vault. Ellen Sandin missed qualifying by one place in the long jump, finishing 10th.
Nick Scarvelis, the state leader in the shot put all season, dominated the field and improved his state-leading mark with a throw of 65-4. He finished second in the discus at 179-10.
Stamatia Scarvelis finished third in the girls shot put with a mark of 39-8.50.
Bartholomew ran 1:55.31 to finish fourth overall in the 800, while Sushchikh clocked 9:23.29 to place fourth in the 3200.
Plesons nabbed sixth place with a clearance of 11-3.
