The Santa Barbara Volleyball Club’s 15-Smack team won its pool in Division 2 of the 15s age bracket at a Southern California Volleyball Association tournament over the weekend.
The team beat Coast 15-3, Protege 15-1, and Sport Shack 15-1 to go 3-0 in pool before heading into playoffs. The team then lost a battle to Club Troy 15-1.
“Christy (Maguire, assistant) and I were very happy about how the girls played on Saturday,” said Coach Jake Hong. “They have been working really hard during practices, making changes in their game, and it showed at this tournament. They played with a lot of intensity, especially on the defensive side. And, Bailey Roach had her best tournament of the year. She played with a lot of energy and got many digs all day long which helped us play as well as we did.”
Coach John Sener’s 15-Blue team played a solid day of volleyball. The team finished with a 1-2 record in its pool to finish third and stay in Division 5.
Coach Sener said that all the girls played with such intensity and passion on the court. ”Volleyball is a team sport and these girls are really learning to understand and grasp that concept.”
The 12-Smack team pulled together and had some of its best games of the season.
“The team’s great serving and defense were key. The team also played a tough offense led by Delaney Mayfield in the middle,” remarked Coach Erin Dohm.
The team competed in Division 5 and placed second for the day, beating Club Jamba 12-Kathy and Mavericks 12-Bonnee, and losing a close three-game match to The Bridge 12-Red.
“We are excited and look forward going into Regionals,” Dohm continued.
The 12-Smack will finish its season at the regional tournament at the end of May.
