Hannah Harris pitched out of two big jams and struck out La Quinta batters at an impressive rate on Thursday, but she had to wait very patiently for any run support.
It finally came in the sixth inning, as catcher Haley Peterson belted a two-run, bases-loaded double to left field which ultimately led to a 3-0 Dos Pueblos victory in the first round of the CIF Division IV softball playoffs.
With one out and three runners on, Peterson came up and was instructed to try for a bunt on a suicide squeeze to bring in the go-ahead run. The count went to 1-2, however, and she got to swing away, sending a deep fly ball to the fence in left. A wild pitch followed right after that to allow the third run to score.
Harris struck out 12 and allowed just four hits on the day, escaping a bases-loaded situation in the top of the fifth and striking out the final two batters in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third.
La Quinta starter Amanda Garcia allowed just one hit, but left after the third inning to attend her Senior Prom. Adri Cardoza took over and pitched admirably the rest of the way, but DP managed to break through in the sixth.
The Chargers (18-9) will play either Whittier Christian or Sunny Hills in the second round on Tuesday.
