Brooke Hanson and partner Lauren Fendrick dropped their last two matches and finished fourth at the FIVB World Tour Shanghai JInshan Open on Sunday.
Hanson, a former UCSB volleyball star, and Fendrick fell to American compatriots Jen Kessy and April Ross in the semifinals (21-17, 21-15) and lost to Austria’s Stefanie Schwaiger-Doris Schwaiger in the bronze-medal match, 21-19, 21-23, 21-15. They had beaten the Austrians earlier in the tournament.
The fourth-place finish matched their previous best finish at the season-opening Brasilia Open. In both tournaments, Hanson-Fendrick advanced out of the qualifier’s bracket to play in the main draw.
Seventh seeded Marleen Van Iersel and Sanne Keizer from the Netherlands rallied past defending event champions Kessy and Ross 2-1 for their first title.
