Dos Pueblos senior throwing sensation Nick Scarvelis qualified for the CIF State Meet in the discus and shot put Friday night at the Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College.
Scarvelis will be joined at next week’s State Meet in Clovis by DP teammate and senior classmate Marina Plesons, who qualified in the girls pole vault.
The Dartmouth-bound Plesons cleared 11-9 on her third and final attempt to exceed the qualifying standard of 11-6.
“Her coach was a little nervous,” DP head coach Dave Kuderka said of his wife, Susan, who coaches Plesons. “(Marina) kept making her vaults on her third attempts.”
Kuderka said he expected Plesons to qualify.
“I kind of expected it based on the talent she brings to the table,” he said. “She’s a 5-foot high jumper, a 17-5 long jumper and she’s run on the school-record in 4×100 relay team. When I look at all those things, I say, ‘Yeah.’ She’s put in the time. She’s put in four years of jumping. I thought she had the capability.”
The UCLA-bound Scarvelis, the CIF-SS Division 2 champion, added the Masters title to his collection with a winning mark of 63-3.5. He finished fifth in the discus at 177-05.
His freshman sister, Stamatia, didn’t advance. She finished ninth with a throw of 39-3.
Sergey Sushchikh, a UCLA commit, missed qualifying in the boys 3200. He ran 9:14.86 to finish 11th in the race. The qualifying time was 9:09.68.
Harvard-bound Connor Reck of Santa Ynez qualified for State in the boys 800. He finished 10th in 1:54.00 and beat the qualifying standard of 1:54.23.
