(RALEIGH, N.C.) Westmont’s Coby Cress of Waddell, Arizona has been named to the 2011 Capital One
Academic All-America® Baseball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA). Cress, who graduated from Westmont earlier this month, played outfield for the
Warriors in his junior and senior seasons.
In 2011, Cress posted a .335 batting average and drove in 21 RBIs. The right-hander notched 18 multi-hit
games while creating a .422 slugging percentage and a .401 on base percentage. Against Azusa Pacific,
Cress drove a walk-off triple into centerfield in the thirteenth inning to secure a 5-4 win for the Warriors.
Cress transferred to Westmont after attending and playing baseball for Arizona State where he was on a
full academic presidential scholarship. As a Warrior, Cress is a two-time GSAC Scholar-Athlete and NAIA
Scholar-Athlete. A member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, Cress is also a recipient of the Landmark
Global Scholar Scholarship Award which is given out to a top student in economics and business. Cress
has a cumulative GPA of 3.955.
Cress is only the fourth Westmont athlete to receive the prestigious award and the first to do so for
Westmont baseball.
Last month, Cress was honored as a recipient of the Golden Eagle Award. Though Cress could not
attend the banquet due to a Warrior road game, a statement from Cress was read by Westmont athletic
director Dave Odell.
“It was a long, hard road that led me from my former college to Westmont,” wrote Cress, “The events that
brought me here can only be described as God actively at work. I am blessed to be on a team of guys
that are working relentlessly to build a winning program that is God-honoring. My time at Westmont has
been nothing short of transformative.”
CoSIDA’s Academic All-America Award® is given out annually to the top student-athletes from around the
nation. Cress, one of 66 collegiate baseball players in 2011 to receive the honor, was named to the
college division third-team.
