It wasn’t easy, but the Bishop Diego boys volleyball team secured a playoff spot on Tuesday in a 5-set road win over a scrappy Nordhoff team, 20-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 15-10.
Johnny Brand amassed 26 kills and James Fazio distributed 51 assists for the Cardinals, who trailed for much of the second game after losing the first.
“We definitely didn’t play our game in the beginning of this match, but we’ve been pretty good late in games this year and we gutted this one out,” said coach Jason Donnelly.
Michael Winnewisser came off the bench and stabilized the middle with five kills, and Brandon Gonzalez was solid all around with nine kills, three aces and six digs. Robert Connolly added 10 kills and three digs of his own, including a diving save into the scoreboard late in the fifth set.
Bishop (12-8, 5-4) will celebrate its seniors on Thursday night against Fillmore.
