Katie Voss won the 400 meter hurdles on Friday in the second-fastest time in school history (65.60), leading SBCC to a second-place finish in WSC Track & Field Meet No. 2 at L.A. Valley.
West L.A. finished first with 183 points, followed by the Vaqueros at 109.
Kelli Johnson won the high jump at 1.67 meters and Elisabeth Bransgard captured the discus with a throw of 41.06m. Bransgard was second in the hammer (36.98m) and shot put (10.82m).
Ayla Granados placed second in the 1500m (4:51.04) and third in the 800 (2:25.28). Kate Earle was second in the 100 in 16.38.
SBCC was sixth in the men’s meet with 27 points. Glendale took first, edging Bakersfield 147-134.
The top Vaquero performers were Ryan Fluence (4th, 110m hurdles, 17.55); Richard Somdah (5th, 400m, 49.76); Josh Moore (5th, hammer, 32.20; 6th, discus, 33.35m) and Cal Keating (5th, long jump, 6.37m; 5th, high jump 1.73m).
“We went against the strongest teams in the conference today and against some tough weather conditions as well (90-degree temps),” said coach Scott Fickerson. “The athletes got after it and competed tough and we got some very strong results.
“Heading into the conference championships, the women are ranked second and we‘re going to get fired up and go for the top spot at Bakersfield.”
The Vaqueros will travel to Costa Mesa for the Orange Coast Invitational on Friday
