Santa Barbara golfers struggled over the back nine and suffered its first Channel League loss on Wednesday, falling to host Ventura 361-366.
“We were unable to overcome putting woes and nerves,” Dons coach James Bedard said. “Ventura played very solid one through five, not taking a score over 74.”
The Cougars’ Erik Thorbecke shared medalist honors with Santa Barbara’s Sean Searls at even-par 70.
The result leaves the Dons and Cougars tied for first place after the first round of play at 3-1. Santa Barbara is 12-3 overall and Ventura 8-1.
“We still control our own destiny in league,” said Bedard.
