Two SBCC doubles teams reached the third round on the first day of the prestigious Ojai Tennis Tournament.
Regis Fastrez-Che Borja and Troy Akin-Rob Herr both had first-round byes, then swept their second-round matches.
Fastrez-Borja beat Nic Bacchini-Bgary Peiffer of Folsom Lake 6-2, 6-0 at the Oxnard Tennis Center and will take on a team from Reedley in Friday’s third round at 12:30 p.m.
Akin-Herr knocked off Phillip Nguyen-Lyle Thomassin of Mission 6-0, 6-2 to reach the third round.
In singles, Fastrez and John Rosenkvist got to the second round before losing while Akin was eliminated in the first round, falling to David Mejia of Fresno City 6-1, 6-3.
Fastrez blanked Tung Vu of Mission 6-0, 6-0, then lost to No. 6 seed Oliver Andrzejczuk of Cypress 6-3, 6-3. Rosenkvist rallied to beat Nik Tummala of Folsom Lake 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 before falling to Jony Chai of Cerritos 6-0, 6-1.
“This was a pretty good first day,” said coach Ryan Heinberg. “Ojai features schools from all over the state and it’s the top three from each school. If we win on Friday, we get to play in Ojai, so that’s what we’re shooting for.”
