Congleton named coach of the year; 7 Vaqueros make All-WSC
After sweeping through the competition on the field, SBCC swept the big awards for the All-WSC Gold Division softball team. Seven members of the Vaqueros’ WSC championship squad made the all-conference team.
Kailey Snyder was voted Pitcher of the Year, shortstop Laura Cannon was the Player of the Year and Paula Congleton was named Coach of the Year.
SBCC posted the best record in school history (31-5) and is ranked No. 7 in Southern Cal and 13th in the state. The Vaqueros were 16-2 in the Gold Division, beating runner-up Ventura by two games.
Snyder, a sophomore from St. Joseph High, compiled a 14-1 conference record and led the WSC in strikeouts with 133. She had a 0.60 ERA and set a school record with 15 strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Moorpark on March 22.
Snyder was also the WSC’s top batter with a .463 average and led the seven-team circuit in slugging percentage (.805).
Laura Cannon, a sophomore from Berkeley, was first in homers (4), RBIs (21) and runs (19) and No. 4 in batting average (.421). She was second in hits (24), slugging percentage (.754) and stolen bases (17).
It was the third Coach of the Year honor for Congleton, who also received the award in 2001 and ‘07.
First-team All-WSC choices were first baseman Jasmyne Holmes, third baseman Lisa Zeitlin (.385 avg.) and center fielder Joan Cannon, who batted .377 and ranked No. 3 in hits (23) and stolen bases (14).
Nicole Adair, an outfielder and pitcher, was a second-team selection while catcher Stephanie Bolanos (.333 avg.) made honorable mention. Adair posted a .379 batting average and was 4-1 in the circle with a 1.27 ERA.
The Vaqueros will play in the Southern Cal Regional on May 7-8 against an opponent to be determined this weekend.
