SBCC’s Dodge Ward shot 79 and 73 at the longest golf course in California on Monday to earn a spot in the Southern Cal Regional but his team came up five strokes shy of qualifying.
Ward, a freshman from San Marcos High, turned in a 4-over-par 152 in the 36-hole WSC Finals at Los Serranos CC in Chino Hills. The par-74 South Course measures 7,521 yards from the black tees.
Aaron West of Canyons was the medalist at 71-74–145 and earned Player of the Year honors.
Canyons won WSC matches 9 and 10 on Monday to finish with a 59-1 record. Glendale took second (42-18) and was the second automatic qualifier for the So Cal Regional, which will take place on May 9 at Bermuda Dunes near Palm Springs.
Hancock shot 384-390–774 and edged SBCC by five strokes for the final regional berth.
“We trailed Hancock by five after the first round and couldn’t make it up,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “I’m very pleased with how we competed at the end of the year. Our team stuck with it and almost made it to the Regional.”
