Two starting doubles players were out for San Marcos tennis on Thursday, but it didn’t seem to slow down the dominant Royals, who beat Ventura 13-5 in a Channel League match.
Due to an injury and a field trip, two starters for San Marcos were unable to play, forcing coach Jarrod Bradley to form two new doubles teams. The new duos Travis Mann/ Adam Smith and Garrett Hazarian/Garrett Timmons each team swept their sets and combined for 6 points.
The Royals swept their doubles for the third time this year. Travis Enholm and Parker Funk moved to 25-2 for the season.
“The two Garrett’s were awesome today and probably played the best tennis on all the courts. They only lost one game on the day and really dominated the net. Jackson and Adam were nearly as impressive, winning easy points with their dominant serves and aggressive returns,” praised Bradley.
Petar Jivkov provided the spark in singles with an impressive comeback win against Jacob Rucker (6-3) after falling behind 2-3.
“Petar really turned the set around at 2-3 by hitting more penetrating ground strokes and forcing Jacob into tough backhands on the run. That set up some great angles for Petar and he went on a roll to win 4 games in a row to win the set.”
With the win, the Royals maintain their second place position in Channel league at 4-1, 9-3 overall. Ventura dropped to 1-4 in league.
Royals play at San Luis Obispo on Friday.
