Santa Barbara’s Lakey Peterson has won the 2011 Rob Machado Seaside Pro Junior in North San Diego County, earning a good chunk of points in her quest to repeat as North American ASP Junior champion.
Peterson won Saturday’s four-person heat over Nage Melamed, Leila Hurst and Taylor Pitz. Peterson’s two-wave score of 14.76 bested Melamed’s 11.10. The 16-year-old Californian recorded her highest point total of the contest in the final.
“The final was super fun and the waves were super good the whole time,” Peterson said. “The waves never really stopped which was nice. I didn’t really have that good of heats in the beginning and I had been sick in bed the past few days. All of the girls were surfing so well and I’m excited to win.”
Conner Coffin competed in the Junior boys contest, finishing up with an equal-17th after bowing out in the fourth round. Parker Coffin was also in the lineup, advancing through one heat before getting knocked out in the third round.
Florida’s Evan Geiselman went on to win the boys event, putting him in second in the ASP North American Pro Junior Series. Kolohe Andino remains No. 1 after reaching Saturday’s final.
Peterson is the top female after the first of three girls events. It was the fifth of nine boys events. The top performers in each series qualify for the ASP World Junior Tour.
“I want to go to Worlds and this result puts me in a good position,” Peterson said. “Hopefully I can get a couple more results this year.”
