Santa Barbara’s top two players weren’t at their best on Thursday in a rivalry match against Dos Pueblos, but the Dons got clutch play from James Morton, Ryan Stoll and Jonathan Collins to rally for a 389-393 win.
Collins shot a 1-under 35 on the back nine and Morton and Ryan shot 37s to help Santa Barbara overcome a five-shot deficit after first nine holes.
“It was really nice to have the other guys step up their game and play well,” Santa Barbara coach James Bedard said. “Depth has been our strength all year and I know that Mickey and Sean really want to rebound when Ventura comes to town next week with the Channel League title on the line.”
Sean Searls and Mickey Kirby both shot 82s, while Morton led the way with a medal round of 74. Collins fired a 75 and Stoll a 78.
Lane Fuller shot a 75 and Michael Yi and 76 to lead Dos Pueblos (3-3).
“The intensity was really up for this one and we are really grateful to walk away with a win against a very talented Dos Pueblos team,” said Bedard.
The four-shot difference was a typical match between the two rivals. The previous match was tied through five scores and Santa Barbara prevailed with a lower sixth score.
“In two meetings between these two teams, with nearly 800 shots of golf, to be separated by four shots is remarkable and a testament to how competitive high school golf is in this area,” said DP coach Rob Schiff.
