Everyone is stepping for the Dos Pueblos baseball team during its winning streak.
On Wednesday, it was pitcher Luke Loggins who gave the Chargers a solid five innings in a 5-2 non-league win at Oxnard.
Loggins’ performance helped DP extend its winning streak to 11 games.
“I have to commend Luke Loggins on how he stepped up to the plate and took advantage of the start,” DP coach Nate Mendoza said. “He did a great job getting ahead of hitters.”
Loggins, a junior, was making his first start. Facing the 10th-ranked team in CIF Division 1, he worked five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, four hits and two walks, while striking out two.
“Luke has a great changeup and curveball,” Mendoza said. “He’s not a guy that’s going to blow guys away, but he gets guys to get way out in front and roll their front foot, and hit a lot of fly balls. He got ahead of their hitters the majority of the time.”
Joe Huthsing, who started the game at catcher, relieved Loggins in the sixth and retired all six batters he faced (3 by strikeout) to earn the save.
Huthsing also gave the Chargers (11-2) some breathing room with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning to expand the lead to 5-2. His hit scored Steven Reveles and Ben York
Reveles went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Jordan Drewisch also went 2-4 with a double and Dylan Rohde went 2-for-3.
The game was the first for DP since winning a tournament title in Arizona.
“It was a different atmosphere,” Mendoza said. “I felt we were little dead at the beginning of the game. They persevered against a good team. We found a way to win.”
