Despite a grand slam by Tim Leary, Westmont lost both ends of a baseball doubleheader to Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday at Russ Carr Field, 12-7 and 5-4.
In the first game, Westmont (15-26, 7-22 Golden State Athletic
Conference) gave up four runs in each of the first three innings to spot the Sea Lions to a 12-0 lead. The Warriors scored seven runs in the remaining six innings while holding Point Loma (23-16, 18-13) scoreless, but it was too little to late.
Starter Ryan Sullivan (2-2) took the loss after giving up eight runs on six hits in just an inning and two thirds work. Point Loma’s Kenny Houser (4-2) was awarded the win. In five innings he allowed two runs on four hits.
Westmont got off to a much better start in game number two when starting pitcher Tim Leary launched a grand slam home run over the outfield fence in the first inning.
The Warriors did not score again, however, the Sea Lions scored one the second, three in the third and one in the fifth to hand the Warriors a 5-4 loss.
The last run for Point Loma came on a solo home run by left-fielder Scott Stidham.
Leary (2-5), who pitched five innings, took the loss having given up five runs, four earned, on five hits. He struck out three and walked three.
Josh Dexheimer (2-1), who came on in relief in the third inning, picked up the win. Dexheimer held the Warriors scoreless while giving up just three hits in four innings of work.
Chris Gonzalez retired the Warriors in order in the seventh inning to earn his third save of the season.
The Warriors will play a non-conference game on Thursday when they hit the road to take on the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos. First pitch is at three o’clock
