Sophomore shortstop Laura Cannon went 4-4 with two homers and four RBIs in the first game on Thursday and SBCC went on to sweep Moorpark 8-0 and 10-0 in a WSC Gold Division softball doubleheader. The second game was halted after five innings by the eight-run rule.
The 15th-ranked Vaqueros (25-4, 13-2) have a two-game lead over Ventura (11-4) atop the conference standings with three to play. SBCC is seeking its first WSC crown.
Kailey Snyder (22-3) got both pitching wins in the road sweep over the Raiders (14-15, 8-8). In the opener, she tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts for her 11th shutout. She went two innings in the nightcap with Nicole Adair pitching the last three innings. They combined on a 1-hit shutout with the only hit coming in the third inning.
Laura Cannon belted a three-run homer in the first inning of the opener and a solo shot leading off the seventh. She was 4-4 with four RBIs, four runs and three stolen bases. Joan Cannon, her twin sister, was 2-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, Adair went 3-3 with two runs and five stolen bases. Lisa Zeitlin was 2-4 and knocked in three runs. The Vaqueros scored five times in the first inning, with the help of five walks, and five more in the fourth.
The Vaqueros, ranked No. 8 in Southern Cal, will host the Bash at the Beach this weekend at Pershing Park. On Saturday, they’ll take on Saddleback (12:30 p.m.) and Golden West (2:30 p.m.). On Sunday, they’ll play East L.A. at 10 a.m. and Rio Hondo at noon.
