San Marcos volleyball swept Ventura on Thursday, but not without a third game coming down to the wire.
Royals team captain Jackson Kunz hit a tie-breaking kill to end the third game 30-28. San Marcos won the previous two games 25-21, 25-23 to tie Ventura for third place in the Channel League.
“It was a thrilling match for us. We played some of our best volleyball all year tonight, and everyone was playing hard,” said coach Roger Kuntz. “Ventura had beaten us twice before, so tonight was sweet revenge for us.”
Kunz led the team with 12 kills and three ace serves.
Center Neil Holliday helped distribute the ball, finishing with a game-high 35 assists. Ben Mckenzie pitched in with 9 kills, while Kevin Hempy had four kills on just 5 attempts, along with 4 blocks.
Both Ventura and San Marcos moved to 2-3 in the Channel league, and the Royals jumped to 12-8 overall.
San Marcos hosts Santa Barbara on Tuesday night in their last home contest of the season.
