DP heads to championship game in Arizona

Dos Pueblos baseball continued its dominance at the Chris Moon Memorial Classic held in Arizona on Friday, winning its fourth straight at the tournament and ninth straight overall with a 16-6 rout of Cathedral City in a 5-inning mercy rule semifinal.

This win advances Dos Pueblos to the championship game Saturday against Sabino High School of Tucson, which is ranked 26th in the nation and is currently on a 14-game win streak.

“We’ll be ready to compete tomorrow and bring a championship home to Goleta,” stated DP coach Nate Mendoza.

The Chargers began the game with a Micheal Spiritosanto two-run double after a Ben York single and a Joe Huthsing walk.

Dos Pueblos blew the game open with a 10-run third inning.

The run streak started with a double from Kyle Richardson, followed by a triple from Colin Cole. After a  Jordan Drewisch double, the Chargers capatilized on a dropped ball by Cathedral City’s center fielder, allowing two more runs to score. DP continued the onslaught with five more runs to bring the score to 14-2 after the third.

The Chargers scored runs in the fourth and fifth to finish off the game.

“The game got out of hand in the third. It was a competitive game until the center fielder’s error,” explained Mendoza.

Spiritosanto led the offense, going 3 for4, with two doubles, one run scored and two RBI. Colin Cole was 2 for 2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Other Chargers having big days at the plate included Jordan Drewisch, who hit two doubles scored two runs and drove in two, and Kyle Richardson with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Matt Soto pitched four innings for Dos Pueblos, giving up six hits and two runs, earning his first win of the season. Perferio Avila came in to pitch the fifth and last inning, allowing one run.

“Matt Soto did a great job competing out there. He threw strikes while letting our defense play a little bit.” said Mendoza

Mendoza plans on putting the sophomore Cole on the mound for the championship game.

“Colin Cole will pitch and compete for as many innings as we need him to.”

Dos Pueblos moved to 9-2 overall.
