Rob Wigod, a former baseball coach and athletic director at Los Alamitos High, has been named the commissioner of athletics for the CIF-Southern Section.
Wigod has been the section’s assistant commissioner for 11 years, in charge of the administration of football, wrestling and baseball.
Wigod, 52, will replace Jim Staunton, whose resignation as commissioner is effective at the end of June. Staunton has been section commissioner since 1999.
The CIF is the governing body for high school sports in the state.
Wigod will be responsible of the section’s 581 member schools.
He said communication will be a point of emphasis in his job.
“It will be my responsibility to stay in contact with our section schools so they know us and we know them,” Wigod told the Orange County Register. “Challenges will continue to come forward, and we have to face them.”
Among the challenges he faces are keeping the Southern Section financially strong, and improving relations between the section’s public and private schools.
“There needs to be more understanding about how we can all work together,” he said.
