Cate’s defense held off a last-minute surge by Thacher for a 6-5 victory in the oldest high school lacrosse rivalry in the state.
Six different players scored goals for the Rams (3-1): Jack Langan, Mac Greason, Wes Greason, Kyle Mayfield, Kyler Jae and Michael Hassman.
The defense was led by captains Luke Shover and Cormac O’Connor. Goalie Jason Pacheco made 10 saves.
After a lost face-off with under two minutes to play, Cate held strong for a long, final defensive series, including forcing a last-second shot high to seal the victory.
The Rams play host to Newport Harbor on Wednesday afternoon.
