Bishop runs wild in 6-1 win over Santa Clara

Bishop Diego was a team on the run Wednesday in its Frontier League baseball game at Santa Clara.

The Cardinals stole 12 bases and got a solid pitching performance from Jack Gregson to defeat the Saints 6-1.

“We were pretty aggressive on the bases, and we played catch today. Those were the big differences,” said Bishop Diego coach Dan Yokubaitis.

Cody Yokubaitis got the Cardinals off and running with a two-run double in the first inning. He then stole third and scored the third run on a balk.

Bishop scored single runs in the third and fourth with the help of stolen bases. In the third, Scott Mandrell walked, stole second and third and came home on a wild pitch.

Reese Moulton scored the fifth run after a single, steals of second and third and a fielder’s choice.

Gregson held the Saints to five hits, while striking out six and walking two. He also contributed a pair of hits, including a double.

“He had his best day today,” said coach Yokubaitis.
