After a productive week at the plate, Westmont second baseman Brandon Allen of Irvine has been named the Golden State Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week. The sophomore produced a .643 batting average over three games, going nine for 14. He also tallied four runs scored and four RBIs.
“It was exciting for a younger guy in our program to have a breakout week,” said Westmont head coach Robert Ruiz. “When we needed to turn things around and win some ballgames, he stepped up. He was fearless and aggressive all week. We needed the spark he provided as the seventh or eighth hitter in our lineup.”
Allen, who is on a five-game hitting streak, had three hits in each of last week’s games and hit a triple in each game.
Allen was three for five with three runs scored in the Warriors’ 14-11 loss to Cal State San Marcos on Thursday. He tripled to right-center field to lead off the fifth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Gildea.
On Friday, the Warriors swept San Diego Christian in a doubleheader. In the opening game, Allen belted a two-RBI triple to center in the fourth inning, part of a three-for-five performance with a run and three RBIs. Westmont won the opener 11-9 in ten innings.
In the seven-inning second game, which Westmont won 6-4, Allen went three for four, driving in the Warriors’ third run with another triple to center field.
On the year, Allen is hitting .329 with nine RBIs.
The Warriors will conclude the 2011 season this week with five games. On Wednesday and Thursday the Warriors will host the Cougars of Azusa Pacific at Russ Carr Field. Then on Friday, Westmont will host San Diego Christian in a make-up game. All three games are scheduled for a three o’clock start.
On Saturday, the Warriors will complete the season with a doubleheader at Azusa Pacific. First pitch is at noon.
