Santa Barbara’s standout senior center back Tony Alfaro has accepted an offer to play at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Dons’ soccer coach Todd Heil said on Monday.
Alfaro was a key member of the Dons’ team that reached the CIF-SS Division 1 final and won the CIF State Regional Division 2 championship. He also was part of the 2010 team that won the CIF-SS Division 2 title. Alfaro was the Division 2 Defensive Player of the Year that year as a junior.
Alfaro, an All-CIF first-team selection, will join former Dons star Alain Rangel at Dominguez Hills, a perennial NCAA Division 2 power. Alain’s brother, Hiram Rangel, played on the Toros’ NCAA national championship team in 2008.
Alfaro scored one of the most memorable goals in Santa Barbara soccer history, beating the JSerra goalkeeper on a 60-yard free kick to win in a quarterfinal game in the final seconds of double overtime.
