Yokubaitis fires one-hitter to lead Bishop in league opener

Cody Yokubaitis pitched a one-hitter, and Bishop Diego erupted for four runs in the seventh inning to beat Santa Clara 5-1 in a Frontier League baseball opener on Friday.

Yokubaitis was hurt by a couple of errors in the first inning and fell behind 1-0. But he kept his composure and shut down the Saints the rest of the way. The lone hit off him came in the second inning. He struck out 10 and walked one.

“He was around the zone all day,” said Bishop coach Dan Yokubaitis of his pitcher and son. “He was throwing strikes, that was the difference.”

The Cardinals’ defense played better after the first inning. Coach Yokubaitis cited the play of catcher John Salda and shortstop Sam Kwock.

Kwock provided the big blow in the sixth inning, a three-run double.

Jack Gregson went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals.

Bishop Diego improves to 4-2 on the season.
