Westmont men’s tennis, the seventh ranked team in the NAIA, posted a 6-3 win over Williams (Mass.), the ninth ranked team in the NCAA Division III polls. Westmont improved to 6-5 with the victory.
The Warriors took two out of three doubles matches from the Ephs. At No. 1, Westmont’s Carlos Lima and Bryan Cox defeated Bryan Chow and Matt Micheli 8-2. Westmont also won on the No. 2 court where Lukas Zielen and Tim Görenson defeated Felix Sun and Richard Meyer by a score of 8-4.
Williams picked up a point with an 8-0 win by Zach Weiss and Kevin Shallcross over Tiago Hayashi and Kent Stormans at No. 3 doubles.
The Ephs evened the scored at two-points each when Dylan Page swept Seth Grotelueschen at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0. Görenson regained the lead for the Warriors by defeating Meyer at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-3.
“I played pretty good today,” said Görenson. “My ground stroke was pretty solid. He had a lot of double faults and didn’t have that many big shots. I was ahead 5-1 (in the second set) and had a couple of set points, but I lost a bit of concentration and he won two games.”
Westmont took a 4-2 advantage when Lima defeated Sun by scores of 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Cox then sealed the victory for the Warriors with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win.
The Warriors have six matches remaining in the regular season and are positioned well for an at-large berth in the NAIA National Tournament to be held in Mobile, Alabama beginning May 17.
The Warriors will host #12 Vanguard on Tuesday at the Abbott Tennis Courts, beginning at noon.
