Westmont managed just two hits as it was blanked by third-ranked Cal Baptist 5-0 Thursday in Riverside.
The Lancers’ Drew Madrigal pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing just one base on balls. Geoff Rocha took the loss for the Warriors giving up four runs on ten hits. Rocha struck out three and did not allow a walk.
Cal Baptist is 19-2, 6-0.
Tim Leary and Colten Christian had the hits for Westmont (9-8. 2-4 GSAC).
Zach Esquerra drove in all the runs for California Baptist. The right fielder picked up an RBI in the first inning when he singled up the middle to score Matt Marnatti from third base. Then in the bottom of the seventh, reliever Jacob Regalado (2/3 inning, one run on two hits) surrendered a grand slam to Esquerra that went over the left-center field wall.
Westmont’s Pete McCarthy pitched in the bottom of the eighth inning, retiring all three batters he faced.
The Warriors and Lancers will face off again on Saturday in a doubleheader at Westmont’s Russ Carr Field. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
