Warriors top Morro Bay, lose to Grace Brethren

Carpinteria High routed Morro Bay 10-4 in its softball season opener on Saturday, then fell to Grace Brethren 2-0 at the Santa Ynez Tournament.

Roxanne Hugo belted a two-run homer in the third inning and had four RBIs in the victory, which ended after five innings by the time limit.

Catalina Maldonado pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts in the opener. She allowed just three hits with nine strikeouts in the loss to Grace Brethren. Kathy Dunn tossed a two-hitter for the Lancers and homered in the fifth.

“For our first two games, we played well,” said Warrior coach Henry Gonzales. “We just had a few too many mental mistakes.”
