Almost exactly one year after the opening of the rebuilt Westmont Track, Westmont hosted the Westmont Collegiate Classic. The competition included teams from Grace College (Ind.). George Fox (Ore.), Fresno Pacific, California Lutheran, Fresno Pacific and The Master’s. UC Santa Barbara also had competitors entered into the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon.
Fresno Pacific won the men’s competition, edging out the second-place Warriors 187 to 163. California Lutheran and George Fox tied for third place with 86.50 points each. The Master’s finished fifth with 26 points and Grace was sixth with 23.
Westmont won the women’s competition, posting 154.50 points to George Fox’ 130 points. Fresno Pacific placed third with 128 points while California Lutheran tallied 90.50 points to claim fourth. The Master’s was fifth with 26 points, one more than sixth-place Grace.
The women’s heptathlon was won by Maureen Ajoku of UC Santa Barbara who tallied 4,865 points. Ayla Draper of the Master’s took second with 4,024 points.
Derek Masterson of UCSB placed first in the decathlon with an impressive total of 7,159 points. Westmont’s Adam Thompkins took second with 6,293 points, a mark that could earn him a spot in the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May. Thompkins improved his previous best by 848 points.
Westmont’s Sondra Blockman shaved 0.16 second off her personal best in the 100 meter hurdles. Blockman finished second in the event with a time of 14.82, earning an automatic qualification to the NAIA National Championship.
Angelina Gonzalez reduced her personal best time in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase by more than seven seconds. Gonzalez’ mark of 11:26.15 set a new school record. The mark was good enough for a provisional qualification time, but missed the automatic qualification standard by just 1.15 seconds.
Also establishing a new school record were Amanda Chevalier, Jane Dietrich, Blockman and Laurel Stormans in the 4 x 100 meter relay. The same team had held the record at 49.57, but took off more than half a second, to establish a new time of 49.06.
On the men’s side, Andrew Kolodinski set a third school record with a throw of 70.18 meters (230 feet 3 inches) in the javelin. His throw was more than 12 meters longer than the automatic qualifying standard for the event and an improvement of more than three meters over his personal best.
Next Friday, the Warriors will participate in a three-way meet with Biola at Fresno Pacific.
