CORVALLIS, Ore. – Freshman Brandon Trinkwon went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI and several superb defensive plays in leading UCSB to an 8-3 baseball victory over No. 23 Oregon State on Sunday.
The victory salvaged one game for the Gauchos in the three-game series at Goss Stadium.
UCSB handed the Beavers only their second home loss of the season and improved to 11-8 this year. Oregon State falls to 18-6.
Trinkwon reached base in all five plate appearances, getting on base on an error by OSU’s shortstop Ryan Dunn in the ninth inning. Trinkwon later came around to score in the inning.
The freshman from Tustin has now reached base in each of his last seven at-bats after going 2-for-2 on Saturday.
Trinkwon led a 15-hit attack for the Gauchos on Sunday as Ben Edelstein, Mark Haddow and Trevor Whyte all had multiple hits.
Greg Davis allowed just an unearned run in 5.1 innings, giving up six hits while walking and striking out two. Davis, a senior, improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
Edelstein and Trinkwon opened the game with singles as Haddow’s single scored one run and Whyte’s ground out brought in another. Haddow’s single chased OSU starter James Nygren after just four batters.
After Oregon State scored an unearned run in the second, the Gauchos struck for three runs — all coming with two outs — in the second.
Joe Wallace scored on Edelstein’s double and Trinkwon’s single brought in Edelstein. Sean Williams’ single plated Trinkwon and the Gauchos led 5-1.
Davis had to work his way out of several innings, but as a staff the Gauchos stranded 14 OSU base runners.
UCSB added single runs in the fourth and the fifth as Trinkwon’s double brought in Dan Camou in the fourth and Ryan Palermo’s double scored Whyte in the fifth.
Haddow’s single in the fourth inning scored Trinkwon as the Gauchos scored their most runs since a 10-9 win over Sacramento State on March 6.
UCSB travels to LMU for a 3 p.m. game on Wednesday before hosting San Jose State for three games next weekend.
