Dillan Bennett was admittedly nervous before coaching his first varsity volleyball match. But once the first serve was made, Bennett was totally immersed in the action on the court.
His Laguna Blanca Owls made him a winner in his debut, sweeping Hueneme 24-23, 25-21, 25-18 Tuesday night at home.
“I was nervous setting up before the game,” the 19-year-old coach said. “It was stressful before the game, but once the game started I was pretty much in the zone. I rehearsed (the first-game scenario) a couple times in my head.”
Spencer Dusebout led the Owls with 14 kills on 22 attempts, four aces and 10 digs. Bennett cited the play of Peter Sorensen and Conner Gray, who were playing in their first volleyball match. Sorensen had two kills and two aces and two blocks and Gray dished out 24 sets and had five digs.
“I think the kids played great,” Bennett said. “They stayed positive throughout the match. The kids played great defense, which is what it’s gong to take this year.”
