Petar Jivkov won two singles sets and the San Marcos doubles teams went 9-0 to carry the Royals to a 12-6 win over Cate in a non-league boys tennis match on Friday.
“Doubles has traditionally been our strength but this year we have three teams that are capable of beating anyone on any given day,” San Marcos coach Jarrod Bradley said. “They compete well in practice and try to play better than each other in every match.”
Blake Mackall notched half of Cate’s points by going 3-0 in singles.
“Blake played very well. He had a very good match with Jikov,” Cate coach Bob Bonning said. Mackall won 6-3. His other wins were 6-0 and 6-1.
Austin Lokre gave Jivkov a battle before falling 6-4.
But it was the doubles that made the difference.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Bonning said. “We have good athletes and good tennis players, we don’t quite yet have a team.”
The Royals got a good performance from the team of Spencer Kennedy and Jake Wheelock. They swept their sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in their first start.
“Spencer and Jake played with poise beyond their years. They were aggressive at the net, communicated well and were a model of consistency with their serves and returns. Their future looks bright.”
Jackson Foster and Jackson Mann improved their record to 20-4 and the Royals improved to 59-14 on the season in doubles.
The Royals improve to 6-2 while Cate falls to 0-2.
