The No. 66-ranked UC Santa Barbara women’s tennis team was defeated by the No. 11-ranked Northwestern Wildcats 4-0, in a match marred by multiple rain delays.
Due to the unpredictable weather doubles was not played and the Gauchos were forced to cancel the second match of their doubleheader against Dartmouth.
In singles play the Gauchos quickly fell behind 3-0, after losing matches at courts No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 against a Northwestern team eager to finish the match in order to avoid a rain out.
The fourth and decisive point was harder for the Wildcats to obtain as Jill Damion and Kate Turvey had a back and forth first set at court No. 2 before Turvey pulled out the tiebreaker to win the set 7-5.
Paola Cos also extended her first set to a tiebreaker at court No. 5 before losing the set 7-6. Sofia Novak had a rough start losing the first set of her match 6-1, at court No. 3, but she roared back in the second set to force a tiebreaker that nearly forced the teams to abandon the match.
Northwestern`s Belinda Niu won the second set tiebreaker 7-6, to clinch the victory for the Wildcats and the in-progress matches at courts No. 2 and No. 5 were abandoned.
The Gauchos took the court 45-minutes later for the second match of their doubleheader against Dartmouth, but after two rain delays the match was abandoned.
Next up for the Gauchos is a match at No. 33-ranked SMU Saturday, March 26 beginning at noon.
