San Marcos defeated defending PAC 7 champion Arroyo Grande 12-6 in a non-league boys tennis match on Tuesday.
The Royals improve to 2-1 while Arroyo Grande falls to 2-1.
Sophomore Petar Jivkov defeated two highly ranked opponents in going 3-0. Petar bested Eli Whittle 6-3 and Sean Hollister 7-5 after saving three set points at 4-5 with Hollister serving.
“Petar made a huge statement today that he has improved and is capable of beating anyone,” coach Jarrod Bradley said. “He dictated points with a variety of shots including his trademark inside-out forehand, drop shots and volleys. His defensive game has also improved and allowed him to stay in points longer and frustrate his opponents.”
Garrett Hazarian came back from 2-5 to defeat Jordan Hayashi 7-6 (6) in his final set of the day.
In doubles, Jackson Foster and Jackson Mann swept with scores of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0 while the newly formed tandem of Travis Enholm and Parker Funk also swept 6-3, 6-3, 6-0.
“I’m proud that our guys have really focused on placing our serves in the box better and winning easy points,” Bradley said. “We have guys that can hit powerful first serves but they’re really starting to see the benefit of serving a high percentage of first serves.”
