LONG BEACH – The UCSB men’s swim team opened the Pac-10 Swimming
Championships on Wednesday evening and has already posted a new school record in the
800 freestyle relay. The championships, which run through Saturday, are being held at
Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
The Gauchos’ ‘A’ 800 free relay team of Garrett Thompson, Lucas Norman, Ryan Hanni and
Mike London broke the UCSB record in the event with a time of 6:30.06, which is a NCAA ‘B’
cut. The time breaks the previous record, which was set in 2009, by 1.01 seconds. UCSB
placed fifth in the event.
In the first event of the meet, the 200 medley relay, the Gaucho ‘A’ team of Kevin Ferguson,
Tim Freeman, Max Horrell and Chris Peterson finished fourth with a time of 1:28.28. The
mark is a NCAA ‘B’ cut and the third-best time in program history.
The Gaucho ‘B’ medley relay team of Ryan Garcia, Evan Simoni, Dylan Templeton and Andrew
Latimer posted a time of 1:32.66. The 800 free ‘B’ team of Alex Campbell, Randy Aakhus,
Andrew Dossa and Scott Nocco posted a time of 6:46.59.
After today’s two events, UCSB is in fourth place with 58 points. Stanford is currently in first
with 74 points.
