DP wins eighth in a row, advances to semifinals

Dos Pueblos pushed its baseball win streak to eight games after beating a tough Tucson High team 5-2 at the Chris Moon Memorial Classic at Cherry Field  in Tucson.

For the Chargers, it was the second game of the day, and proved to be their biggest win in Arizona so far. Tuscon is the host team for the tournament.

Joe Huthsing started as pitcher for Dos Pueblos and went six innings while giving up only two runs on seven hits. He had six strikeouts, and is now 3-0. Colin Cole stepped in the seventh to finish off the game by striking out two Tuscon opponents.

“It was a very rowdy atmosphere,” DP coach Nate Mendoza said. “Colin showed great composure to get us out of that.”

Mendoza also praised catcher Kyle Richardson for his performance in their second game of the day.

“Richardson has been hitting really well. He’s played amazing behind the dish and has been really consistent as catcher. He’s a big part of our pitching success,” said Mendoza

Steven Reveles played a solid game, going 3-4 with two runs and two stolen bases. Reveles also scored the first run by stealing home plate.

The Chargers now are 3-0 in the tournament. Their next game is Friday against Cathedral City in the semifinals.

“We definitely brought our bats to this tournament,” Mendoza said. “Offensively, we’ve underachieved a little, but these last three games we have definitely broken out. I really commend our guys for playing well in the hot weather.”
