San Marcos doubles teams lost only one set, and the Royals beat Ventura 10-8 in a Channel League boys tennis match on Tuesday.
The Cougars put Michael Lowe, the 102nd ranked player in Boys 18s, in doubles but the Royals won two of three against Ventura’s No. 1 tandem.
Nik Kilpelainen-Garrett Timmons and Travis Enholm-Parker Funk won all their sets, while Jackson Foster-Jackson Mann went 2-1.
“Our returns are improving but we can still improve our first serve percentage and our net play,” San Marcos coach Jarrod Bradley said. “Travis and Parker served formidably and Nik and Garrett played strong all around. Nik made 80 percent of his first serves on the day and was only broken once all day. He’s really stepped up this year.”
In singles, Ventura’s Brendan McClain, ranked No. 3 in Boys 16s in Southern California, won all his sets at love, helping the Cougars go 7-2.
The Royals (4-1, 1-0) will play at Santa Barbara on Thursday.
