Santa Barbara will be taking on the surprise team in Division 2 of the CIF Southern California Regional Boys Soccer Championship.
The Dons travel to San Diego to play University City at 4 p.m. at Mira Mesa High.
University City was the 11th-seeded team in the San Diego Section Division 3 Tournament and upset No. 1 St. Augustine in a penalty-kick shootout (3-2) to capture the championship. The teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation.
University City (15-8-0) lost to St.Augustine twice during the regular season.
The No. 2-seeded Centurions are led by junior midfielder Takuya Okada, a member of the U.S. under-17 national team player pool (8 goals, 9 assists), and forward Spencer Williams (14 goals). They defeated Perris-Citrus Hill 2-0 in Monday’s regional opener.
The Dons (20-6-3) survived a penalty-kick shootout against Canoga Park (5-4) after battling to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime.
Santa Barbara is seeking its second straight trip to the regional final. The Dons lost to Corona del Mar last year.
